The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018) Review

The Possession of Hannah Grace
The Possession of Hannah Grace

Director: Diederik Van Rooijen

Writer: Brian Sieve

Stars: Shay Mitchell, Grey Damon, Kirby Johnson

The Setup:

Before the credits, we start out in Hannah’s room, and she’s tied to the bed in a vert Exorcist-like scene. Two priest and her father are there. The priest is levitated across the room and his head is impales on a spike. She makes the other priest strange himself. Finally, her father smothers her with a pillow. Hannah is dead, but the priest is saved.

The Title of the movie appears on the screen.

3 months later, Megan is going to a job interview at the Boston Metro Hospital. She’s going to be the late night morgue intake technician. The coroner explains all the intake procedures, which I though was surprisingly interesting.

Credits roll. (10 minutes in)

She’s on the job and gets her first intake. All goes well. Not long after, she has a vision; she has PTSD from her time as a cop. She shot a criminal, but he shot her partner first. A homeless guy manages to sneak inside during an intake. This intake is someone called “Hannah Grace.” Weird things start to happen almost immediately.

Summary:

This had an excellent set and location; a huge, creepy morgue with automatic lights that weren’t sensitive enough and automatically locking doors. Trivia: It’s the same underground installation used in “Cabin in the Woods.” This setting would have to try hard not to be creepy, so the movie gets a head start in that area.

The acting was good all around. Once thing I particularly liked is that everyone, from the main character to the boyfriend cop to the goofy security guard, all did their jobs in a normal and realistic way. No one did anything stupid, as is all-too common in horror movies. Everyone reacted to the crazy situation in a realistic way.

I’ll go 7 out of 10 on this one. There’s not really any surprises in the film, as it’s pretty formulaic in places, but the location and the acting sell it. I though it was really entertaining.
