Short Film: Vincent (1982)

Synopsis

Vincent Molloy is obsessed with Vincent Price. Everything he does is twisted in a creepy way, at least until his mother tells him to play outside. All the narration rhymes like Evil Dr. Seuss. Vincent’s got a very active imagination and tends to get into trouble, but he’s a good boy at heart– isn’t he?

Commentary

Tim Burton was a major fan of Vincent Price and wrote the poem, and later, created the animation we see here. The Vincent character here actually resembles young Tim Burton. Price was one of Burton’s idols growing up, and Burton has said many times that it was a lifelong dream to collaborate on this short film with the real Vincent. What must it have been like for Price to have such a rabid fanbase that something like this would have been created?

Although Burton had done nine or ten shorts before this, he hadn’t yet done a feature film. It was another six years before he worked on Beetlejuice, which made him a recognized name in Hollywood. Still, you can see a lot fo the same design elements used in many of Burton’s later animated (and non-animated) films.
