Synopsis

A young couple are moving into a new house, and the girl is very emotional about it, but not in a good way. They mention that he has a pet snake. They meet the neighbors, an old man and his wife with dementia. Emmy, an artist, acts really flaky, and he is borderline abusive because of it.

Em starts painting outside, and she meets more of the neighbors, who want to tell her their story. Then the husband opens the mail and finds something he doesn’t like. He angrily goes off in search of Em, and he winds up at the neighbor’s house. They are a weird group; let’s leave it at that. He finds her in the basement, and it’s not at all what he expected to find…

Commentary

It’s well-acted, well-scripted, and there’s no fluff or filler here. It starts out all emotional and melodramatic, but as the story progresses, things just get weirder and weirder. I’m not sure I understand the ending, unless the point of the film is that “some problems just take care of themselves.” Still, it’s really well done!
