Short Film: La Noria (2019) Review

Synopsis

A boy opens up and winds a music box then he plays with his various toys, including a partially constructed Erector set (remember those?) Ferris wheel. He doesn’t look happy as he remembers his family. He gets frustrated and breaks the wheel, with pieces flying everywhere. One wheel goes under the bed.

His family photos fall off the wall, and then he notices that they’re gone. Then things start getting creepy in that old house. The oysters arrive to make his evening a little worse…

Commentary

“La Noria” is Spanish for “Ferris wheel” if you were wondering. There’s no real dialog, and you’ll have no trouble figuring out what’s going on, maybe not in great detail, but enough to get the emotional impact.

The artwork, music, and animation are absolutely outstanding here. The monsters are brilliantly animated, and of course, they turn out to be nothing like we’d expect. Sometimes, the monsters are the only friends you have.
