Synopsis
Mike is a dog groomer. He moved to Hollywood to make movies, but instead, he grooms dogs. He’s written a screenplay for “Cat Carrie,” a version of “Carrie” that stars only cats. His producer friend Sebastian is more hung up because he’s never heard of “Carrie” and advises him against making the film.
One day, Cora, a client, comes in, and Mike is very attracted to her. He daydreams about scenes from his “Car Carrie” and gets chewed out by his boss for being distracted on the job.
“You are just a giant, sad, dirty, man-baby,” explains his friend. He becomes obsessed with the rats in his apartment. His creepy landlord offers him a tiny kitten to help with the rat problems. That’s not going to work, so Mike brings home an especially vicious cat from work to deal with the aggressive, possibly-mutant rats.
Finally, Cora comes to his house for their date. They go out and find a missing dog, which they try to return to its owner. The owner’s not home, so they decide to break in. They share some very interesting stories. They eventually return to Mike’s home, where the two really hit it off. Then things start to go wrong…
Worst. First. Date. Ever.
Commentary
One of Mike’s passions is video art, and almost every scene has some kind of visual effect or colorful montage or something interesting going on. He makes heavy use of “glitch art,” which I find a little annoying, but I guess that’s a matter of taste. It didn’t distract from the story, and I was actually enjoying it by the end, so that’s not a point against it.
The horror aspect of this is pretty mild, mostly in the psychedelic flashes of what’s happening in Mike’s mind. It’s really only marginally horror, but it was actually a lot of fun to watch, and I do recommend it, especially if you’re into the more “artsy” side of film.
