This was very fun. Full of humor, over the top gore, action, and likable characters. It’s a classic spreading zombie plague story with a lot of silliness. We give it a big thumbs up.
Synopsis
In a secret laboratory, two days before Halloween, a scientist works with lab rats. The rats look vicious and attack the other rats. The scientist then takes his work home with him. Some men in the parking lot take the formula from him. Credits roll.
A couple of men in hazardous material suits are out in their rowboat at night. They watch as a couple of bad guys throw a body into the toxic lake. It’s the guys from the parking lot, and they inject the two men in the boat with the new drug. They shoot one of the men, but the other gets convulsions, so they throw both in the lake.
Tavo gets ready for school and leaves; it’s Halloween. We see that Tavo is not good at parkour. Then some little kid steals his shoes. He runs into his friend Cronos, who talks about Woody Harrelson in “Zombieland.” He then faints at the sight of a cockroach. They both like Ana a lot.
Tavo’s father is Lalo, and he’s got a dead body to hold a wake. It’s Don Segis, the scientist, who drowned in the river. The dead man left Lalo a huge pornography collection, and both Tavo and Cronos are fascinated at the good luck. They get pretty engrossed in the porn until a zombie shows up in the room. The dead man is up and about! Cronos says he must be a zombie, but is he a fast zombie or a slow zombie?
Tavo and Cronos run to tell Lalo that his father is up and moving around, but he doesn’t believe them. They show him a video on their phone, so he’s at least curious. Cronos explains the rules of zombies and how infections spread. Meanwhile, Don Segis attacks and bites Ari, a guy who came over for some pot.
The two guys can’t find Lalo or his father, so they decide to head over to the party at the common area. Ana is there, and Tavo warns her about the zombie threat. David is there, and he’s the jealous type, so he doesn’t get along with Tavo.
Meanwhile, the now-three zombies are walking right down the street, but since it’s Halloween, no one notices. Soon, there are more zombies. They hear the music at the party and home in on that. Deivid gets bitten, and Ana runs away with Tavo. The group ends up decapitating a zombie with a hedge trimmer.
Tavo and Ana go to the police, but they only pick on Tavo because he’s from a lower-class neighborhood. They watch a group of zombies on the closed-circuit TV, but it’s Halloween. Soon, the policemen are zombies as well. They eventually shut the gate to the gated community, locking the zombies inside.
Cronos, Rex, and Johnny go to see Chief Vargas, a Narco. They go to the door wanting weapons for the zombie apocalypse. She slams the door in their faces and then chews out the assassin drug guys for killing her best drug scientist. They explain that the drug was supposed to make people act like zombies, and Vargas has heard all this before. Soon, everyone is out on the lawn fighting zombies. They soon decide that the zombies are headed to the community party, and Vargas gives all the kids real weapons.
Cronos finds out that Tava likes Ana and calls him a traitor. Rex decides to split off with Cronos on their own. They suddenly get an out-of-the-blue romantic music video. Cronos saves his parents from the zombies, so now they call him “Cronos” instead of Jacob.
Meanwhile, the zombies are closing in on the “Ghost Ball” party. Johnny, the annoying American kid, gives a rousing speech to Tavo about how to use a gun. They all get to the party in time to save Rex’s mother.
The zombies still manage to raid the main party, and it gets out of control very quickly. Johnny’s a crack shot, but he runs out of ammo and gets eaten.
They turn on some Arjona music, and it hypnotizes the zombies. Vargas and her goon come in and start cleaning up the zombies– they have plenty of ammo. OK, they don’t have enough, and they get it too. Tavo runs back in, grabs one of Vargas’s grenades, and blows the whole place up.
Suddenly, a zombie dog bites Ana in the butt. Cronos says the only way to save her might be to suck out the poison, like in old Western films. After that’s done, they figure out the dog wasn’t even infected.
Rex’s mother and Cronos’s father are at the gate telling the police about zombies, but they aren’t buying it. Meanwhile, Ana and Tavo get together, and it looks like Cronos and Rex will also.
Meanwhile, Zombie Johnny goes walking down the street in the opposite direction.
Commentary
The slow-motion gore shots are pretty fun. There are a few good laughs here. Don’t think too hard on this one, it’s just silly fun. We did like it more than we expected, and we definitely recommend it, especially if you’re a fan of “One Piece” (2023).
